Around the world

Five major events of the week, told for what went right. Each names the outlets that reported it.

  1. A physics Nobel for listening to the universe through ice

Francis Halzen won the Nobel prize in physics for turning an enormous block of ice at the south pole into a detector for neutrinos, the ghost-like particles that reach Earth from outer space. The IceCube detector has given astronomers a new way to observe the cosmos.

  2. Medicine prize for the light switch that maps the brain

Three scientists, among them Karl Deisseroth of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, shared the Nobel prize in medicine for light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. The work, which began with pond algae, gave researchers a new way to study how the brain works.

  3. Chemistry Nobel solves a puzzle of life's mirror-image molecules

Henri B Kagan and Kensō Soai were awarded the chemistry prize for showing how reactions can produce an overwhelming excess of one of two mirror-image forms of a molecule. The discovery has helped explain how medicines work in the body.

  4. Four astronauts head to the space station, led by Jessica Watkins

A new crew of four launched from Florida on SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule for a mission that will last until spring. Commander Jessica Watkins, on her second trip to the station, is the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit.

  5. Equal prize money comes to women's elite tennis

All combined WTA 1000 tournaments will pay women the same prize money as men from 2027, the Women's Tennis Association announced. The tour called it a major milestone in its fight for equality.

Learn AI

Three things to try this week, whichever assistant you use.

  1. Give it a job, not a question

Say who it should be and what you need back. A clear role, a clear audience and a clear format do more than a clever question.

    Try

You are an editor. Cut this to 80 words for a newsletter reader, and keep every number.

  2. Ask where each fact came from

When the answer matters, ask the model to list the facts it used and the source of each. Anything it cannot source is a claim to check, not a fact to repeat.

    Try

List each factual claim in your answer, with where it comes from. Mark any you are unsure of.

  3. Keep the prompts that work

Save a prompt that gave you a good result, with an example of what it produced. Starting from a tested prompt is faster, and the results are more consistent.

    Try

Here is a prompt that worked and the result I liked. Use the same approach for this new task.

From EVOKE

New technology, and the problem it solves

Announcements from EVOKE's own businesses, written by the company — not news reporting.

Product photos without the photo shoot

The problem
A seller with one photo of a product needs many: other angles, the product in use, a short video, and words for the listing. Each usually means another shoot or another supplier.
What it does
EVOKE Tools turns a single image into new angles, lifestyle scenes and 360° video, and writes the product description and search tags to go with them.
